I hate RPGs

This is why I spend so long creating a character, but then I end up getting bored after all that time spent on the game, shut it off, and likely never play again. :3

@Mishy I tried, I honestly tried, but I just don't have the attention span to sustain interest after taking so long to make a character and then discovering I hate him/her. Although I did play the console ports (extensively), but those are nothing like the PC version.

I have the problem of getting bored and or having more fun making the character then finishing the game. I'm constantly looking at my characters features/armor and if I don't like something I almost always start over!

Here is another idea: make different beginnings to choose from, a bit like dragon age origins, but times 10. I like to make many different characters, but i really hate having to go through the same tutorial shit or stuff like that.

i have the same problem with RPGs, i love them but like you said about half way through i start over....mostly because i think to myself "oh this character is too squishy....what if i had this?...hmmmm....ok ill try it" then i never go back....except oblivion it seems....but yeah i feel u =P

I've never done any of the main story in Oblivion except that which was mandatory.

In my opinion creating character is easy. You probably ask "why?" Its easy. I dont pay much attention to what skills t choose or something. First I choose if I want to be a mage or fighter then i start playing and choose what I like. In game if I have to choose 1 of 2 skills i choose the one I need more. The biggest fun is from decision you make along in the game not creating character that anyone can make or its immortal, you need to make cha that is coolest for you and dont think you could do better because you probably going the right way creating it.

Ya I don't like making my character godly I just like being unique, like in NWN2 I made a swashbuckler guy like a speed and dodging melee guy. He wasn't super strong but that just seemed more interesting than anything else.

Too true. I always had that problem. Now i rely on Builds that other ppl made. It gets me a decent character but I guess it kinda takes away from the game. Sticking to a build kinda takes away that freedom that makes an rpg an rpg.

I actually play RPGs for the story more than freedom.

Yeah, I can sympathize. The need to make sure my character is good and I am getting everything and wait what if I had chose that other path and I'm not sure if I made the right choice and... ARGH. It's seriously stressing.

Little friendly tip: if you hate that feeling, don't play Knights in the Nightmare, dude. It's a really, really good game, but it's a tactical RPG where you can miss characters and units and lose your unrecoverable units real fast and you have to choose when to fuse and can gimp yourself out of weapons easily and etcetera. It's awesome, but stressing as HELL :P.

I have reroled toons in WoW and other RPGs dozens and dozens of times.....I want a RPG with extremely wide customization so i can finally make my character the way I want him. There just never seems to be enough options involved. And If I finally get him how I want him I either can't choose a name or it is not available.

Meh--here is what I do to make a character.

I look at a class that looks nice... then I think... what could I do to make this character completely out of whack.

I mean, like a cleric who has taken the role of true neutral. Even to the point of healing injured enemies.

Or take up the character class in a game commonly thought of as useless, and use it to make a mockery of the game. Kind of like what Red Chocobo did in /h(er|is)/ Let's Play Pokemon Crystal.

I mean, a game gets a lot more fun when I do parody play throughs.

I mean, the most fun character in Children of Mana I have, is the character I have invested everything into having really powerful arrows--but he has no armour. Generally refusing to wear anything but what gives him the least defense. He also has the autorevive ability on and a decent stock of Angel Graels. This character was modeled after Ran Cossack. Only the most canon noncanon Megaman character ever made (I mean, go back five or six years, and you get people who swear that Ran was an official Capcom character).

That is my solution to this large amount of choice... to choose the choice that makes the biggest mockery of the system--and pull it off.

Yeah, creating a character the right way can be hard in a lot of rpgs, but they're usually worth it.

At least in terms of stats I like that WoW lets you change your talent spec whenever you want for a small fee of gold. If games had this feature (such as Fallout 3 letting you redo your perks or skill points for a fee of some caps) that would be fine with me. Sometimes it helps to have laser weapons but if all your points are in small guns you're S.O.L.

That's one of the things that are great with ME2: you can respec Shepard for a fee. You can't change class (there are 6 classes in the game), but you can redistribute all your skill points. It encourages experimenting, I like it a lot.

On other games, I do a first playthrough on Normal difficulty to discover the game, and make an opinion of what works and what doesn't. Then I can Play again and do my favorite build, which always ends up being a rogue based on speed and sneak attacks and speed (yeah, I said it twice, that's how important it is).

I usually only play through a game once.

I end up doing everything the first time through and the game better give me a damn good reason to play through again or it's likely to end up at Gamestop. That's not just for RPGs.

If you're going for the story it does make sense to do a single playtrough...
What I often do is make a simple character for the game, something efficiënt or simply fun (mostly something shapeshifting related... but that's just me :D) and play 2-3 hours to get a good feel of the game. After that I start a new game, creating a character that I feel fits in with the story and playstyle and I still find fun to play with.

@timyadeadhomie Not only are the console BG titles NOT ports, they are nothing like the pc games and in fact the only similarities are that they have the name Baldur's Gate in them.

Think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Robert Downey Jrs Shelock Holmes. Completely contradictory itself.

The same goes for Fallout 1 and 2 and the mindless, shallow xbox beat em up Fallout: Piece of...I mean Brotherhood of Steel.

I'm getting into this late but I agree that Fallout 3 was kind of a disappointment when compared to earlier fallout 1 and 2. But in their defense they are only bethesda and it would have been insane to make the amount of detail of those games with modern graphics within bethesda's company philosophy and talent etc. But maybe with New Vegas we can see something somewhere in between.

Also, liked kingdom hearts but if I remember right I only played the first one.

Loved the NWN games on pc, never knew they came out for console, but in regards to the pc ones I never seemed to finish them :D

KH1 was good, CoM decent (mostly took some time to get used to), KH2 ...well, simply sucked :/ and the DS one (358/2) is ... decent but too much of a grind, you're playing it because you're supposed to like the game and the series but it just can't be considered good...
Looking forward to Birth by Sleep though :D

@Fallout2Forever Still, you have to admit, the co-op in Steel was a lot of fun.

And while the muliplayer was beyond having nothing like it, the single player was so bland that I had to force myself really badly to get through to where I got in the game.

I mean.. Disney and Final Fantasy mixed? My first instinct is to pass on it.

Much like when I walk by the "Disney Princesses" DVDs at the store, my first instinct is to suspect ol' Waltie is spinning in his grave.

I dunno--it is just really hard for me not to do a correlation in my head between Kingdom Hearts and all the WRONG crossovers Disney has done over the years specifically to siphon money from our wallets.

This is the main reason I am not really interested in buying these games.

@KatrinaTheLamia I don't presume to know if you would like them but, if you get the chance, at least give them a shot. I never thought I would have liked KH either, but after playing 1 & 2 back to back in one sitting, I must say, they are quite good.

@KatrinaTheLamia I abstained from the series for the same reason, then the wife heard about it. Long story short we have the first two, I haven't played either, and she got stuck on number one and never cared to restart or figure out where she messed up. When I get into a last-generation PS2 grind though I will be sure to check them out along with Shadows of the Colossus, Final Fantasy XII (still in the plastic, purchased on an impulse buy) and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. I also have some ground to break in the Suikoden series.

@rawkr Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of the best games on the ps2 IMO.

I grew up on RPGs and the like, but now I have difficulty playing them. I prefer multiplayer games more than most now, primarily because I feel as though I need to show off what I can do or have done to people in-game. I still play single player for the story and gameplay, but I find myself less driven to complete them because I feel as though there is no point. I don't know when I developed this mentality or why, but it's not healthy for my gaming because I'll skip out on some pretty solid titles to play weaker one's with solid multiplayer.

Another problem I have is with the open-world titles. MMOs, the elder scrolls series, hell even Grand Theft Auto; I find myself unable to not FUCK UP the world after a small amount of play.

With MMOs, the constant grind to the endgame becomes listless and makes me wonder why I care. There are few I've played that fixed this problem, primarily Warhammer Online and Guild Wars. Warhammer Online made you feel like you were part of something huge, and made it so you could participate in the fate of your faction right from the beginning. That kept me interested. Guild Wars kept you constantly on the right path with an interesting story and presentation that made you want to know what happened next.

With normal open-world titles, especially ones where you can kill non-enemy NPCs; I just reach a point where I snap. An NPC gives you shit in TES, end conversation and shoot him in the face with an arrow. Oh and GTA...fuck! I start that game, walk about 5 paces down the road, then spawn a Rhino and go to town killing civilians, police, and whomever else looks at me cross. I dunno why I can't do the story. Maybe R* made it so I can't psychologically help myself. I heard somewhere there's a story to the game! Who knew?
@KatrinaTheLamia It's a solid series. Plays more like the Zelda series than FF, which isn't a bad thing. Production values are high and gameplay is solid, and it somehow makes you rarely feel retarded whenever a Disney character flops onto the screen. It's worth a playthrough @xoaks about Legault; it is his opinion, though I agree a rather poorly formed one. It might be better to point out as to why it's ill informed, like for example how 358/2 Days has no context without 2 and how gameplay, while well executed for a hand-held title, is STILL A HANDHELD TITLE and suffers in many ways from it (i.e. Length, sound, graphics, control, etc.) @Legault 358/2 Days has no context without 2!
